Hip-hop has helped overcome ethnic and social barriers and has been a positive force of cohesion for generations, but certain cultural flaws have, over time, obscured its innovative potential. This course includes a historical introduction to the phenomenon, from the 1970s to the present, and an examination of the stereotypes that permeate this musical genre, with lyrics and videos rife with sexism, the cult of money, substance abuse, and homophobia. Lastly, the aim is to emphasize some positive examples.
